WELLNESS
How do we even know what being healthy or feeling well is? When I ask most people what being “healthy” is, they tend to say something about their physical health. Or, refer to someone who “eats healthy food and exercises”. But, being “healthy” is NOT just the numbers on your labs or your level of physical fitness. There is even a lot of confusion about what “healthy” behaviors are. For instance, a lot of the people I study with think they are “very healthy” because they are not eating specific types of foods and/or exercising in a way that they are actually compromising their health. Physical health is just one of many areas of our overall WELLNESS, which the World Health Organization defines as: “not merely the absence of disease or infirmity, but a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being” (1948). But there are 8 areas of Wellness:
1.Physical
2.Emotional
3.Spiritual
4.Environmental
5.Financial
6.Social
7.Occupational
8.Intellectual
The goal is to have these 8 areas balanced so that we are “well”. The more balanced, the more “well” we are…which in essence affects our overall health. So, how do we attain a state of OPTIMAL WELLNESS in our lives? Let’s start by doing a complete Wellness Check Up Yes, just like a physical check up—it is time to see where you are “off” balance. Through a comprehensive Wellness Assessment, we will identify those areas where you are more “balanced” and “less balanced”. I will then create a customized plan based on your results to help you achieve the goal of having a more balanced, less stressful, healthier life. Especially for those seeking help with food, weight or body image, this is a very important first step in getting help. Oftentimes people use food to cope with or escape from areas of their life that are dysfunctional or very stressful. Likewise, people who are so convinced that happiness can only be achieved through having the “perfect” body are distracting themselves from pain in areas of their life that they may or may not be aware of. Through the process of identifying which areas of your life are less “well”, you can start on your path to overcoming your struggles with food, weight and body image. This is Where The Struggle Ends and Optimal Wellness Beings!
